Kitchen Mischief Puts a Sardine Tin on a Cobalt Kitchen Wall

A sardine tin is a small, practical object with an unusually good collection of shapes. There is the curved rim, the folded lid, the repeated bodies of the fish and the yellow interruption of a lemon. Kitchen Mischief 03 treats those ingredients as a still life, giving an unbranded tin enough space to become the main subject. Against cobalt cabinetry, the poster’s warmer ground has a useful independence. The kitchen can be blue without requiring the artwork to disappear into another blue rectangle.

The fruit has escaped the bowl, and the bowl seems to have joined in. Kitchen Mischief 02 takes an ordinary citrus still life and removes one dependable feature: gravity. Limes and a cut grapefruit hover above a cobalt dish, with a coral surface and turquoise ground keeping the arrangement bright. The impossible part is confined to the artwork. On the patio, the chairs still need all their legs and a drink is best kept on an actual table. That little distance between painted mischief and practical furniture is the point of the composition.

Kitchen Mischief Puts a Red Pepper in the Breakfast Corner

There is a perfectly respectable argument for keeping food pictures out of kitchens. The food is already there. Kitchen Mischief starts from the less respectable, more enjoyable counterargument that an oversized red pepper is an excellent thing to encounter before breakfast. Its first poster reduces the subject to a generous red silhouette, a crooked green stem, a single leaf and a yellow highlight. A blue curve underneath behaves rather like an imaginary plate. No recipe, no slogan, no instruction to enjoy your meal.
